In the Press: West End Phoenix — Farm Team

The West End Phoenix profiled Zawadi Farm's distributed model in 2022 — the network of backyard plots, park spaces, a church, and a school that together form the farm's growing base across Toronto. The piece traces how the farm grew from Jessey Njau's own backyard in Rexdale to a nine-site network, and how the model of offering landowners a choice between a CSA box, donating the produce, or managing the land themselves with Zawadi's training has allowed the farm to expand without owning land.

The article captures something essential about how Zawadi thinks about scale: not by acquiring more land or more equipment, but by deepening relationships — with landowners, with CSA members, with the neighbourhoods where the plots sit. The farm sells 75 shares a year, each running 25 weeks across the growing season.
